Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co operated the Cauldon Place Works, Hanley in Staffordshire and was established by Job Ridgway in 1802. The company was one of the largest in the area by the 1870s with over a thousand employees. It made a variety of table and toilet wares in earthenware and porcelain as well as ornamental Parian, eggshell porcelain and majolica wares. It also supplied both the British and Russian royal families.
This charger displays attractive decoration that combines simple naturalism with subjects influenced by Japanese art. A vase of similar decoration was exhibited by Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co at the Paris Exhibition in 1878. It is illustrated in the Art Journal of that year and the firm's works were highlighted twice in the catalogue being described as by 'artists of great ability'. The firm also exhibited at the Phildelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876.
Other pieces by Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
